The Beeb is carrying a story wherein EA mouthpiece Jeff Brown simultaneously begs for pity and declares an apocalypse upon smaller publishers.

"The games maker is concerned about costs of games for the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 2," reports the BBC. "It estimates these will be between 100 and 200% more costly to make than current titles." Here's my translation: "The games maker is sad because, despite new avenues of income, next-generation games will cost you twice as much as old games. You know, because the games maker's bottom line is hurting."

"We look at the transition like a forest fire. It makes the healthy trees stronger, but burns away the weeds," said Brown. Translation: "We own the gaming industry, so don't fuck with us."

I believe that the next-gen consoles are going to be released unecessarily early, and the higher pricing is an industry tactic to get gamers to deplete existing game stock. I predict there's going to be an unusually long transition period between today's consoles and the new ones, during which there will be premium costs for the new hardware and games. It's going to be a test of marketing vs. consumers--can we be convinced to buy the New at an accelerated rate? What was wrong with the old consoles?
